How to check if bottom bracket needs servicing
This is a bit more detail on one of the issues you need to check for when buying a second hand bike.
The issue that you’ll be looking for, is a lateral rocking where there should be no movement, the movement is often known as “play”.
- Grasp is the crank arms as shown in the picture.
In this position there should only be a rotational movement (a forwards circular action).
- With the crank arms level try to rock the crank arm in the direction of the arrows shown in the picture below.
- There should be very little or no movement, when you try to carry out this action.
Note; if there is a knocking movement (or play), this indicates that further action in the form of replacement or repair will be required, this most be taken into account before making that purchase.
